Licence to practise
The cédula profesional: the federal licence to practise medicine at all. Public record, and the floor below which nothing else matters.
Specialty board certification
Certification in the specialty they are actually treating you in, required by law, valid for five years. The certificate number and both dates are published.
Facility licence
The clinic or hospital carries its own sanitary licence, separate from the surgeon's credentials.

Questions patients actually ask
How do I know a Mexican surgeon is board certified?
Mexico has a national system for this and it's public. Specialty certification runs through CONACEM, the national committee of Mexican specialty boards, and it's a legal requirement under the General Health Law rather than an optional credential. Certificates carry a five-year validity window. Each certificate is looked up, its number and both dates published, and the directory linked so you can check it yourself.
Is that different from just having a medical licence?
Completely, and that gap is the reason this site exists. A cédula profesional makes someone a licensed physician. Board certification is what says they are a certified specialist in the field they are operating on you in. Plenty of marketing blurs the two. A surgeon with a valid licence and no specialty certification in the procedure you're booking is a fact you should have before you cross the border, not after.
What about the clinic itself?
Facilities are licensed separately by COFEPRIS. A fully certified surgeon can operate in a facility that isn't licensed, so that's recorded as its own line on every profile.
Does paying you get a doctor a badge?
No. Doctors pay to be listed and promoted, which is disclosed on every page. Certification either appears in the public registry inside its validity window or it doesn't. Payment moves a doctor within a verification level and never across one.
